As a massive Buffy and Xena (this show might be more Xena than Buffy) fan, I have been anxiously waiting for a truly, epic female lead. There have been shows and movies compared to Buffy and Xena (some ridiculously so as female lead plus supernatural does not equal either), but this comes closer than any I have seen. Though, this show is more Xena with it's strong, violent dark haired lead (Bo/Xena) and a witty, weaker (physically) but still loyal and determined side-kick character (Kenzi/Gabrielle).
This show has a great cast who portray a variety of strong characters. The main character, Bo, is a succubus who grew up unaware of the meaning or origin of her powers and having no control over them she is forced to live on the run (sort of like Xena who started the show with a plan to walk away from her violent nature, as she was scared of her strength and her dark side). In the pilot episode, she meets Kenzi a street-smart, tough human and the two become fast friends. Bo also discovers the source of her powers. Like Xena, it is Kenzi who pursues a relationship with Bo and even saves her with her loyalty and her faith in her good side.
Kenzi is probably my favourite character. She has bite. She is aware that as a human she is weaker than her friends, but still never backs down and does whatever she can to help; from using her many contacts to using her wit. She is funny and fearless. She has her own sense of style and flair, and even when she is in someone else's body her character's personality shines through.
As the show unfolds you learn more about the characters' pasts, you see the two, main female, private detectives solving crimes and fighting bad guys, you fall in love with the characters, and you start pairing characters off trying to determine who will be with who.
There are interesting questions that are brought up about morality, love, and friendship as the characters deal with betrayal, loss, and heartbreak as well as their own nature.
One thing that some people may take issues with is that Bo has both male and female significant others. Sometimes, at the same time. And there is a lot of mature scenes. But it makes sense as she is a succubus, but also makes it more interesting as it opens up more possible relationships. It does bring up an interesting point that could be related to human nature as a whole. As a succubus she is meant to have many relationships, but Bo insists that she wants to be monogamous even though it puts her life in danger.
Things to be aware of, Docubus fans are crazy. (Docubus- Lauren/Bo). Most of the ones you come cross online are exceedingly adamant that they belong together. And they can make any scene, no matter what context, turn into proof of that. They also might even be rude or aggressive to people who disagree. I dislike the pairing because for various reasons it is not really a healthy relationship for either, yet even with valid reasons why they should not be together without even addressing their gender (which I don't think matters, and would not mind her with Tamsin) I was still called homophobic by crazed fans who could not conceive of any other reason the two might be better as friends.
I myself am a Dyson/Bo fan. If I had to assign their Buffy counter-parts, Dyson would be Angel, Tamsin would be Spike and Lauren would be Riley. She had too much to overcome with RIley, including lies they both told to each other and the past heartbreak that kept them apart, their timing was always off.
Though, maybe Tamsin will be more Spike like. At the moment, not to much has been learned about her character's background.
All the actors do an amazing job in this, they are so in character even when it isn't their character. There is an episode where they experience a body swap and they end up switching bodies with the person most different from them. The Doctor acts like a crazy person, instead of her usual calm, clear-headed self, and Kenzi finds her Dyson-voice sexy.
All in all, I find it a great show. And it never gets boring, because there are so many twists and surprises.
I would and have recommended it.
